Ready... Set...

Moving day is right around the corner. We have been working very hard the past couple of weeks to get our farmette ready for us.

Tile has been laid.
Rooms have been painted.

This thing has been taken down...
We are still not sure what it is exactly or why it was hanging in one of our doorways.

We also took all of the grates out of the floor...

And spray painted them black.

It's taken a lot of work, but it has all paid off. Our farmette feels like home now.

And we can't wait to move in.

The Mystery Unsolved...

So, in a previous post, we mentioned Betsy, our cardinal.

We have been anxiously anticipating the hatching of the eggs. We couldn't wait to see the cute little babies.

The other day, they began to hatch.

We were so excited about getting to watch them grow up.

Then, something strange happened.

We went to the house one day and looked in the nest. No babies. No shells. No Betsy.

We are not sure what happened to our little birdies. The nest is the only thing left of them...

Closets

Our new house is unique. Very unique. This uniqueness can be endearing. But it can also be confusing.

Take our closets, for instance. The closet in my parents' room is normal. The other closets... not so much.

This is one of the closets in my little brother's room. The ceiling in this room is slanted, so the closet is tiny. My brother is over 6' tall. This closet is only about 4' tall. It should be interesting to see how he uses it.

This is the closet in my room.

I know what you are thinking. Are those stairs? In the closet? Where do they go to?

Absolutely nowhere. I have had a couple people suggest that the stairs may lead to a magical adventure, like in C.S. Lewis's books. But I spent an hour in there painting, and let me assure you, there is no magical world beyond my stairs. Simply a wall.

One of the most puzzling closets is in the basement. The basement of our house is unfinished and, frankly, not a place I want to spend a lot of time in. However, it contains our second "bathroom."  There's this shower...

And this toilet...

In the closet...

When you are in this bathroom/closet, you can see out through the slots in the door, but other people can't see in. Which I think is a little bit creepy. But I guess it's not as creepy as the other way around.

Our house has a few odd features. But that's what makes it so special to us.

(These are all before pics. We will be moving in soon, and we will be posting after pics. )

One Fish, Two Fish...

So we have a pond. Not a huge pond, but a pond nonetheless.  The question on our minds from day one was this: IS IT STOCKED?????

The other day, we decided to test its waters. (Pun intended.)

We took our night crawlers and rods and reels down to the pond and set our lines out. And waited. At first, we were afraid that the pond was not stocked.

Then came the first fish, courtesy of my mom.
 A tiny perch.

Thus began our tiny fish marathon.

We caught a lot of tiny perch. Some of them were so small that we reeled them in without their being hooked; they were just sucking on the worm.

We started to think our pond contained only perch. We were wrong.

We started catching catfish. They were pretty small, but we didn't care. We were just excited that we had catfish.

Then my mom cast out by some trees. Her bobber went under, and she set the hook. She knew immediately that this was a catfish. A big catfish. And she was right.

Did you know that catfish have teeth and they bite??? Well, they do. And they hurt.

But the thumb injury was well worth it.

This day spent beside our pond was one of the most peaceful days we have had in a long time. There is nothing like taking a break from the frenzy that is life to fish with the family.

Here is the front of the house with the bushes gone.  We planted azaleas in place of them.  We tore up the yard a little bit trying to get the large bushes out it was quite the feat!  Now we can enjoy our little front porch which looks out on a huge 2,000 acre farm.  We are still working on the bushes on the sides of the house.  One side of the house we are just trimming them and one side they will be removed.  But, there is a little problem that is also a joy!

A bird has made its home in the bush on the back, right side of the porch.  We will probably take out the bushes on the left, but we will have to leave the right side alone until the eggs hatch and they take flight.  There are steps going up right beside the tree where the bird is nesting.  Allison went up the steps today and the bird dive bombed her!  It scared her to death.  It was kinda funny!  Sorry Alli:}  Our bird friend is a Cardinal.  I think we will name her Betsy.  Sounds fitting doesn't it.  We will work all weekend on some finishing touches.  I hope to have some more before and after pics for you sometime this weekend.  Plus, we have some great pics of our apple and cheery trees.  Thanks for allowing us to share our adventure with you!

Peek a boo porch!

This is a view of our farmhouse with very overgrown bushes totally covering the view of and from the front porch.  Stay tuned for after pics.

Welcome!

We are a mother daughter duo!  I (Michelle) am a library media specialist.  I (Alli) am a college student going into Early Childhood Education.  Working with children is our passion, but on the side we have country hearts.  We love chickens, fruit trees, fishing out of ponds, and old lady flowers.  Just in case you are wondering, old lady flowers include peonies, lilacs, and the lovely Iris flower.  We love to cook together, mainly because we love to eat.  We also love anything vintage and/or antique.

We have recently purchased a 95 year old (1927) farm house on ten acres.  This farmhouse is an answer to our prayers and a dream for our family.  We have a pond, fruit trees (we think), lilac bushes and other unidentified flora.  We have a lean to that will be perfect for our baby chicks that we have ordered through the mail.  That is right!  One day old chicks travel through the postal service.  Hubby has a nice size building as well.  We will claim part of that for our furniture refurbishing business.   The farmhouse is old and in need of repair.  Some of the repairs are fun, others, not so much!

We invite you to join us on our journey as we tackle home improvement projects large and small, start our cottage decorating business, raise our baby chicks and many more adventures!
